The purpose of this paper is to focus on the issues raised within the interfere between modern cargo handling system and high speed ocean freighters (H.S.O.F.). The paper is based on the authors experience from the pre-contract design work of a large high speed ocean-going RoRo Container Carrier (FastShip TG770) and the design of high speed ships and crafts and a large number of traditional cargo carrying vessel’s and their cargo handling systems.

The paper includes issues such as first principle design procedures, the importance of selecting correct methods for determination of hydrodynamic loads and ship motions and the sea environment impact on cargo and cargo securing system. The commercial and operational requirements for the cargo handling system for H.S.O.F.s and their characteristic on loading and off loading operations are highlighted together with the optimisation of hull structure and hull outfit such as stern doors and ramps.

Finally, the classification issue of new and not yet proven technology is addressed.
The overall intention of the paper is to bring a contribution to the development of the fast freight sea transportation industry, the development of reliable methods for the design of large high speed ships and the development of sophisticated cargo handling systems.
